So
what's Pilates all about?
Pilates
is the complete and total integration of the mind and body.
“Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness. It
is the attainment and maintenance of a uniformly developed body
as well as a sound mind, fully capable of naturally, easily and
satisfactorily performing our many and varied daily tasks with spontaneous
zest and pleasure." Joseph H. Pilates
How is Pilates different from other
exercise?
Pilates
based conditioning revolves around the principals of proper breathing,
correct body alignment, total muscular balance, and the connection
of the mind controlling the body. Pilates teaches all movements
initiating from a strong body core, or center. Patterned breathing
is used to increase blood flow and oxygenation, as well as activate
the deep abdominal muscles, which create our “core”.
Pilates work emphasizes balance in the body by strengthening weak
muscles, and increasing the flexibility overall.
How
can Pilates complement what I already use for exercise?
Pilates
is a wonderful addition to any sport. Many injuries are created
by the repetitive movements specific to an individual sport. Golf,
for example, creates an imbalance in the body resulting from the
swing always rotating the same way. Our bodies will adjust to any
repetitive movement quickly, and will create a muscular as well
as a postural imbalance. Many athletes do not discover these intrinsic
imbalances until it creates an injury. Using Pilates as a complement
to any activity, even carrying children, can keep your body feeling
stronger and prevent unnecessary injuries.
Remember, too,
that Rome was not built in a day. Patience and persistence are vital
qualities in the ultimate successful accomplishment of any worthwhile
endeavor.
